October 9: Ugandan Independence Day

October 9th is Independence Day in Uganda - celebrating Uganda's independence from the United Kingdom in 1962.

When we were meeting with the Honorable Betty Castor -- during my one-on-one meeting with the Center researcher studying the impact of the Peace Corps in Uganda, especially as it relates to education -- I learned that Betty was actually a part of the official United States Delegation to Uganda -- invited by President John F. Kennedy to represent the United States!

My hotel (the Fairway Hotel in Nakasero) was decorated for the occasion --

On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Uganda on the 63rd anniversary of Uganda’s independence on October 9.  Together, we have worked to strengthen regional security, promote bilateral trade, and enhance global public health.

We extend our best wishes for the people of Uganda and look forward to building a stronger partnership in the coming year.
