Welcome to Makerere University!

My Host -- Dr. Edward Silvestre Kaweesi -- picked me up at the hotel and escorted me to campus the very next day.  I was so pleased to finally get to set foot on the Makerere University campus and to start to collaborate with my new colleagues at the Great Lakes Center for the Study of the United States!

In addition to a short orientation to the Makerere campus, Dr. Kaweesi introduced me to campus leaders: the Chair of the Department of Political Science, the Dean of Social Sciences, and the Assoc. Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

After months of application process, planning, and virtual/online meetings and orientations -- the day has finally arrived!

Dr. Edward Silvestre Kaweesi - my host - has officially welcomed me to Makerere University and to the Great Lakes Center for the Study of the United States.  It is an honor to be here as a Fulbright Specialist - and to begin working on our projects together in earnest!

Welcome to Uganda!

How wonderful for my host - Dr. Edward Silvestre Kaweesi -- and colleague at the Center -- Denis -- to pick me up at the Entebbe Airport -- making sure that I landed OK and that I got to the hotel safely.  After more than 30 hours of travel - I truly appreciated the warm welcome! And the attention to all of the logistical details.

Awwwwww .... probably the nicest sign I have seen at a baggage claim! My bags were not out first -- but -- they DID arrive -- which is the most important thing

I hope I can go gorilla trekking before I leave Uganda!

Travel from Tampa, Florida to Kampala, Uganda

So excited for the journey from Tampa, Florida to Kampala, Uganda.

Door to door -- the travel will take about 34-35 hours -- and will include 3 flights:

Tampa to JFK

JFK to Doha

Doha to Entebbe

Left the house at 4:00 am to catch the first flight from TPA to JFK -- obligatory selfie with Phoebe

Landing JFK:

The next flight -- JFK to Doha was about 14.5 hours.

Great wifi service on board - and I posted this about 2/3 of the way to Doha:

"I am flying over N Macedonia 🇲🇰 ❤️! (In other news, it’s been a minute since I have seen Titograd on a map 🤣)"

This was my first time flying Qatar Airways and my first time with a layover in Doha. Wow! The airport had a lush garden! After the 15 hours in flight, it was nice to walk around.  There was also a Gordon Ramsay burger restaurant and a Harrod’s Tea Room! Something to look forward to on the way back home.
